Good Morning, God – Everyday Discipleship

Written by Heather Haupt 31 Comments

We can use the everyday things in life to draw close to Jesus and bring our children along too! | Cultivated Lives

“Good Morning, God.”  Isn’t that just the best way to start the day?  There is something so powerful about beginning the day talking to God.  There is something completely life-altering about getting to talk to Him throughout the day about anything and everything.  And watching your children start to do the same…  I can’t even come up with words to adequately describe the wonder.

From the first moment that I knew I was pregnant, my mind started to think through what it would be like to walk and talk and live out this beautiful {albiet sometimes messy} life of loving Jesus with this baby of mine.  There is something so rich, so powerful about this 24-7 living that is so beautifully laid out in Deuteronomy 6:5-7.

I want my kids to love the Lord with their whole being.  I want them to love others and I want them to delight in the adventure of learning.   I know that when those are a reality in their lives that they will grow up to accomplish whatever God has in store for them.

I’m always looking for fresh inspiration.  That’s probably why I enjoy reading blogs, talking to friends and just watching other loving parents interact with their children.  It inspires me as a parent and as a person.

Once our children start on this journey of walking with Christ, they can inspire us too… Lately, Keegan has been coming downstairs in the morning and filling me in on his most recent conversations with God. I love his faith and simple trust.  It’s reminded me to go to Jesus about the little things too.  Knowing Him and walking with Him is about relationship and those relationships blossom when you just spend time together.

goodmorning3

Another place where I find inspiration is in the pages of children’s picture books.  Two years ago, I discovered Good Morning God at our homeschool convention and instantly fell in love with it.  It is a beautiful narrative of a four year old boy, his conversations with God and interactions with his parents as they disciple him in their everyday normal lives.  We’ve loved pouring over the pictures and discussing what the boy is learning about and how he worship’s God whole-heartedly each day of the week.  While the protagonist in the story may be a preschool boy, don’t be fooled into thinking this book is only of interest to the preschool crowd.  There are lovely questions and activities in the back, most of which are over the preschoolers head.  I love how it inspires us all and gives us some tangible examples of what this living out the Christian life looks like.

goodmorning

It’s reminded me of the beauty in simple daily activity such as talking about dinosaurs and Creation while playing outside.  It is going on our “God-Talk Walks,” it is tucking them in bed and laying down next to them and closing out the evening talking with God together.  It’s as simple as praying over boo-boo’s or emotional struggles that baffle both me and my son.  It is spreading peanut butter and thanking God for providing food for us.

The everyday discipling of our children

daily discipleship, even in the dirt

As always, I love your blog post. I would also love this book for my kids. To be honest, I am a bit concerned about teaching my kids religion. Religion is a big part of our lives, but as my husband and I are both music directors for a church I sometimes fear that my children will start thinking of church as “work” and miss the importance of spirituality.

What a precious book! I would love to pour over this with my little guys, especially since Bible time in the morning is one of my older kids’ favorite times of the day.

    Thank you for sharing, Heather!

Heather, thank you so much for this post. My husband stumbled on it and forwarded it to me. If it spoke to his heart, you can only imagine what it did to a mama’s heart! We are new to homeschooling with our 4 beautiful children and try daily to find ways to include God in our “mundane” activities. Thank you for your words, encouragement, and suggestions. I am adding your site to my blog roll and can’t wait to explore more! Thank you!

Thank you for this giveaway. What a neat looking book! I would love to read it with my children. My husband and I make Scripture Stickies stickable Bible verses and we have them posted all over the house so our family is memorizing and meditating on Scripture throughout the day. I would be happy to work with you on a giveaway for your blog — let me know!

I love listening to their interpretations after we read a Bible story, or just a children’s book. So sweet, and often they look at things in a way I never thought of.

We read the bible (most days) and like to watch What’s in the Bible? DVDs. We let my little guy pray over dinner and just try to make God part of our every day! This book looks wonderful! I hope I’ll get to add it to our library! 🙂

We like to write out our prayer requests in a notebook, and pray for them together before we start school. We can see how God has answered previous requests, and watch for more things to pray for!

I think I always need inspiration to discuss the Lord…Thank you so much, Heather, for providing me with much of that inspiration. I know the Lord works through you in my life. xoxo

I would love this book, especially to use with my younger children. Right now the girls and I are going through the Princess and the Kiss devotional. But I think Good Morning God will make a fantastic summer read.

    I hope I win!!!

All of your kids will love this book, Jes! My older boys are just now really enjoying the questions in the back. Questions like “What is a soul?” and such were a little over my preschoolers head, but the 1st and 3rd grader are getting into grappling with that…

Oh let me count the ways….i am enjoying hearing my kids share tidbits they learn in their daily bible/quiet time they just began. I enjoy seeing my toddler sing and do his motions to his favorite ‘God songs’. I feel so blessed to be on his journey discipling our children and growing in my faith right along with them.

We’re mostly doing the little prayers throughout the day — meals and bedtime especially — and seeing them participate, and wanting to! Trying to start a daily devotional time, hopefully at breakfast and start all our days out right! What a great book to encourage Thessalonians 5:17…Thanks for your blog!!

This looks like a great book and something our family sure would enjoy! As my boys discover “everyday” things that are new and exciting to them my excitement is renewed and we praise God in all the little things around us that I usually just take for granted. Sounds like a wonderful book to prompt more of those thoughts and conversations. Thank you!

We start our school day out with prayer and read our Bible aloud and have devotional. We also love listening to our praise and worship music throughout the day.

One of the ways I enjoy walking out my faith with my boys is just through worship. I want them to see me worshiping the Lord on a daily basis, not just at church. We’ll often put on praise music and dance and sing for the Lord together in our living room. Or they’ll “catch” me worshiping the Lord, singing and lifting my hands as I do the breakfast dishes. We almost always have worship music on in the house – it just really helps me stay focused throughout my day, and sets a tone for our home.

This book looks so precious! I just found your blog via Pinterest. Bible time at our house is a highlight of the day. We are using a Charlotte Mason-style Scripture box, and it has been so neat to see my kids learning and retaining God’s Word. Even the littlest ones. And they will randomly sing the books of the Bible songs, or add names like Haggai into their playing. I just love it!

My girls are so creative in their play everyday – it never ceases to amaze me. They turn the simplest things into something new and fun and their imaginations allow them hours of play with something as small as a dishtowel. I’m so grateful for the minds God gave them – and it’s so fun to watch them develop!

Instagram post 2232104592257556739_1420023259 The teen years are such an amazing season of coming into your own, thinking deeply about the world around you as you transition into adulthood. My teens have stepped up to new challenges this year with their education that have really stretched them (and me). Mondayy, my oldest participated in his first debate. This guy has delved deep into Scripture and borrowed books to understand both sides and prep for his debate. All four did a fabulous job thinking these issues through and participating with their assigned position and I love the conversations it has sparked between the four of them as well as in our own home! .
