Ignite Wonder and Inspire Exploration: 6 Awesome Science Kits

The beauty of science is how play-oriented it can be.   Science is about exploration.  It is about asking questions and solving problems. And it can be a whole lot of fun when we turn them loose to explore in a relaxed, playful context. Here are 6 wildly popular science kits for kids that promote the development of important STEM* skills!

* STEM stands for Science Technology Engineering Math.

  1. electric Snap Circuits 300 and Snap Circuits 500 – My boys received this as a gift several years ago and while at the time, only one of my boys was in the 7+ age category for the kit, ALL of my boys quickly became obsessed.  They put some of these circuits together first with dad, but were soon exploring and building their own electrical circuits or following instructions in the booklet on their own.  We only have the Junior kit which has 100 different projects to build.  It’s led to lots of problem solving and trouble shooting.  The next kit up just extends the fun.
  2. robots14-in-1 Solar Robots  – Engineer moving, rolling and swimming robots?!?!? Yes, please!  As the mother of 3 boys, one of whom is obsessed with building things (aka my engineer-in-training), I’m super excited about this one.  Living in such a sunshiney state makes us extra curious about the idea of solar power.  As an added bonus (for parents, anyways) – these robots make NO NOISE!!!  Do I hear an amen out there for quiet toys? 🙂  I also appreciate that it has two levels of building skills covered so both the beginners and more experienced robot builders will still remain equally engaged!  I love gifts that continue to challenge my children past the first couple of weeks.
  3. magnet2 Magnet Science – Unravel the mystery of magnets while you are busy at work/play with this fun kit.  It contains 10 fun experiments and games to draw you in to the magic of magnets!
  4. MagnetsMagic Magnet Penny Kit – Speaking of magic…  I love the idea behind this game that encourages kids to play with the power of magnetism to get these British pennies (they’re made of steel instead of copper) to perform all kinds of magic tricks!Excavate your own crystals and add them to your rock collection!
  5. Crystal Mining Kit is perfect for younger children learning about geology and gems.   You get to hammer and chisel your gems out, wash them up and then inspect!
  6. crystals Earth Science Crystals, Rocks and Minerals allows you to actually grow your own crystals. Perfect for older kids, this kit includes the following genuine specimens: granite, limestone, basal, marble, pumice, calcite, pyrite, quartz, hematite, bornite, fluorite, magnetite, and soapstone.

Yeah! Thanks for reviewing Snap Circuits Jr! I actually have this on my Amazon Christmas list to get my 7 year old son but was slightly hesitant since I’ve never seen/used one in person. Now I feel confidant to go for it :o)

In a fit of mental abstraction, I started a new book AND a grilled cheese at the same time. Shakespeare analysis and cooking do not go hand in hand. 😖😜 #brightestheavenofinvention #peterleithart #shakespeare

The security at the airport said that was the most lemons they had ever seen someone bring thru on a carry on. So excited for homemade strawberry, blueberry, and vanilla lemonade, my husband's specialties!

After several days of gray cold, sunshine beckoned us outside. Actually, they've been working on clearing an area for this fort all week even in the cold. Today is finally warm and 🌞 enough for me to traverse the mesquite forest to join them... #NatureTherapy #everychildoutdoors #momtoo
Instagram post 2233099506281729942_1420023259 You can have a usually tidy home or regularly imaginative children, but seldom do the two simultaneously go hand in hand. She's playing house, raising her children, and informed me she's in the middle of moving... 😯 We can tidy up later... or not... as is evidenced by the hand made basketball hoop still hanging to the side which we ended up incorporating into our space for the time being. But there is peace when we recognize the purpose in their play. #powerofplay #wildandfreechildren #encouragingimagination
Instagram post 2232104592257556739_1420023259 The teen years are such an amazing season of coming into your own, thinking deeply about the world around you as you transition into adulthood. My teens have stepped up to new challenges this year with their education that have really stretched them (and me). Mondayy, my oldest participated in his first debate. This guy has delved deep into Scripture and borrowed books to understand both sides and prep for his debate. All four did a fabulous job thinking these issues through and participating with their assigned position and I love the conversations it has sparked between the four of them as well as in our own home! .

👉👉 Learning to research, learning to reason, and learning to listen to another's arguments are such invaluable skills that will stick with them for the rest of their lives! 👈👈 We are thankful for Worldviews of the Western World curriculum and the Worldview Classes in our area that have provided so much for our homeschool year.
