4 Amazing Block Sets for EVERY Age – not just toddlers!

Written by Heather Haupt 1 Comment

Why blocks are so educational and 4 amazing block sets. {part of the 31 Days of Gift Ideas that Inspire Learning | HeatherHaupt.com}A good set of wood blocks are the quintessential gift of childhood and with good reason.  A child can unleash their imagination, build any variety of things, hone fine-motor skills and explore geometry and physics.

Today I want to give you just a few reasons why blocks are a great tool to inspire learning and then 4 different kinds of block play options!

Why Block Play is Important

I waxed eloquent on this topic when I wrote about how Building with Blocks Builds the Whole Child.  Here are a few of my favorite benefits of block play:

  1. Increases hand-eye coordination
  2. Enhances spatial awareness
  3. Enhances logic thinking capabilities
  4. Enhances language skills as they narrate what they are doing or describing the desired end-product.
  5. Math skills are sharpened in the process of grouping blocks together, adding or subtracting blocks from the group, etc…
  6. Improves social capability by encouraging cooperation as they build “something” together.

Four Amazing Block Sets for EVERY AGE

There are many kinds of blocks out there.  I want to share 4 of my favorite block resources here:

Big set of blocks for imaginative play and creative building.60-Piece Standard Unit Blocks – These large blocks are used in so many ways in our home.  Even with the boys getting older, they still pull these out and love to create mazes for our hamster.  Due to their larger size, they are perfect with babies and toddlers around.

Melissa and Dough Architectural Standard Unit BlocksArchitectural Unit Block Set – This set really helps expands building opportunities and allows for a historical influence.  We don’t own this set, but I can only imagine what my boys would have done when we studied church architecture last spring and looked at architectural themes throughout history.

Citiblocks - the perfect blocks for older kids and adults! Hours of creative play and building possibilities.CitiBlocs – Do you have older children?  These blocks take building to a whole new level.  The opportunities are endless and perfect for a child who loves to build and create!

BionicStar Connectors – We love having these connectors that have introduced lots of new options to our building.  They fit with Citiblocs, Keva, and Kapla blocks. I wrote an entire post about them last year: Geeking Out on this Engineering Toy.Blocks make excellent gifts for kids! They can be an amazingly stimulating toy even for a big kid. {part of the 31 Days of Gift Ideas that Inspire Learning | HeatherHaupt.com}

This is so good. Every time we go through Oliver’s things to purge his room, we just can’t seem to get rid of the blocks! I like the idea of creating more things than simply building with them.

Instagram post 2233099506281729942_1420023259 You can have a usually tidy home or regularly imaginative children, but seldom do the two simultaneously go hand in hand. She's playing house, raising her children, and informed me she's in the middle of moving... 😯 We can tidy up later... or not... as is evidenced by the hand made basketball hoop still hanging to the side which we ended up incorporating into our space for the time being. But there is peace when we recognize the purpose in their play. #powerofplay #wildandfreechildren #encouragingimagination
Instagram post 2232104592257556739_1420023259 The teen years are such an amazing season of coming into your own, thinking deeply about the world around you as you transition into adulthood. My teens have stepped up to new challenges this year with their education that have really stretched them (and me). Mondayy, my oldest participated in his first debate. This guy has delved deep into Scripture and borrowed books to understand both sides and prep for his debate. All four did a fabulous job thinking these issues through and participating with their assigned position and I love the conversations it has sparked between the four of them as well as in our own home! .

👉👉 Learning to research, learning to reason, and learning to listen to another's arguments are such invaluable skills that will stick with them for the rest of their lives! 👈👈 We are thankful for Worldviews of the Western World curriculum and the Worldview Classes in our area that have provided so much for our homeschool year.
