Why We Stopped Homeschooling >> BIG CHANGES

Written by Heather Haupt 15 Comments

Change is inevitable. Sometimes it is incremental and sometimes it is dramatic.

For our family change is coming in epic proportions. (But then, if you follow me on Instagram, you already know that.)  It is a wild ride right now and I’m praying for grace and to come through it with my sanity in tact.

We stopped homeschooling a few weeks ago.  No we didn’t put our kids back in school, but the “school” part of homeschooling has taken a backseat for now as we embrace crazy life-learning opportunities.

My hubby started a new job in Dallas, Texas this last week.  Yep, you heard that right; Texas, as in two states over from here. This is no move-across-town trip. {Not that those are a cake-walk either.}  We are packing up and heading 1,049 miles away. We’ve been furiously packing for the last 3 weeks because the kids and I drive out to join him this weekend.

Can I tell you how crazy this is?  Some of you may have moved recently.  And if that is a move, across state lines where everything in your life is turned topsy-turvy, I have SO much respect for you.  I’m going crazy over here – almost literally. There are days moments-all-through-the-day where I simply don’t know what to do next..  At church this morning, a friend asked for my email address.  I couldn’t even remember how to spell my last name; I’m that far gone, friends.  But I am plugging away.  A few heroic friends have insisted on coming over to help (because I’m awful about recognizing my need for and then asking for help).

So here we are in the midst of all kinds of crazy life-lessons. I’d love to tell you that we are rocking every minute of it, but ya…  I can say that we are learning, through trial and error, to walk this out by asking for forgiveness, praying together, and extending grace to one another.

All that to say, I won’t be blogging here for another few weeks.  We need to get to Texas and then I need to finish preparing to go speak in Utah, oh just a week and a half after we arrive.  I can’t wait to see a few of you at the UTCH Homeschool Conference.

In the meantime, I’ll still be popping into Facebook and with finally upgrading to a smartphone (so I don’t get lost in Dallas), I’ll be posting even more to Instagram!

If any of you are in the Dallas area, let me know!

Texas, here we come. We’ll pick up our lesson plans once we get settled!

p.s. Not quite everything is changing. We’ll be near a Sprouts and a Library!

p.p.s. The kids are mostly excited.  Sad to say goodbye to friends and family, excited for the adventure ahead.  What do they think about the moving process? They are about as thrilled with packing as I am…

That’s great, but I get that it’s stressful. I’ve been considering moving to the Carolinas, but I don’t care for some of their laws. Dallas, I hear, has great homeschool laws! Congrats on your big change! You can do this!

WOW!!! I am praying for you today as you busily pack all.the.things. and take your children 1000 miles from there. How wonderful to know that the Lord goes before you and with you!!! May you know His loving hand upon you as you establish a new home-front. Hugs, Camille

Thanks! Knowing that God has ordained each and every step we take on this journey has made the challenges completely worth it. We are excited to see God’s plan for our family unfold in our new hometown.

You are one brave lady, Heather!! Moving is one of my all-time LEAST favorite things to do in the entire world, and the last time we moved I only had one child!! I am in awe of you.

Joe is from Dallas, and most of his family is still there. I know they have awesome homeschooling laws there, and I hear that the midwifery laws are similarly awesome, which is great for y’all!!

AFHE and Arizona homeschoolers will definitely miss you!!!

    Diana 🙂

Texas is one of the best if not THE best state to homeschool in!!! We are Texans for just a few more days. Can totally, totally, totally relate to your post! We just got all packed up and left our beloved home. On our way to Japan for 3 years. So yeah, we are living life and learning along the way without all of the book work. I guess you could say summer break in the winter/spring. 😉 Best to you are yours!

Oh girl, don’t I know! As a military wife we’ve homeschooled in Washington (state), New York, Virginia, North Carolina, Germany, and now California. I’m praying for you as it is no easy feat to move – and even more so alone! Enjoy your new adventures!

Oh wow. I can’t imagine. I remember reading about your move back from Germany. So many nitty-gritty details to take care of to make that happen. I’m looking forward to getting settled and checking out our new homestate!

What area of Dallas will you be living? We are in the Dallas area, Garland, Sachse, Rowlett area, but we know homeschoolers from all over the area.

We’ll be in the Flower Mound area. After getting a taste for Dallas traffic the weekend before Rich started work, we opted for something as centrally located as possible since he’ll be driving all over the DFW area! Before I realized that Garland and Rowlett was on my list of places to check out. 🙂

Oh, Heather. Packing is SO hard. And by yourself? Ugh.

Praying these last few days at home are not as stressful and this new season is more beautiful than you imagine!

Congratulations! We moved from Buckeye, Arizona to the DFW (Dallas/Fort Worth) area I’m September of 2013. Your going to love it here! I have a few great homeschool contacts in the Dallas area. We’re located closer to Fort Worth now. But we’d love to show you around! We even have a mutual friend, Cati Stokes in case you need a reference that I’m not a crazy person, LOL! Welcome to Texas!!!!!

Ha! Yes! THIS IS MY LIFE RIGHT NOW. Quite literally… furious packing and purging for three weeks–one of which my husband headed off to start his new job. My daughter and I joined him just yesterday. In a hotel room. Now it’s time to apartment shop while finalize what we’re doing with the house we left. I feel you. Many prayers!

Instagram post 2232104592257556739_1420023259 The teen years are such an amazing season of coming into your own, thinking deeply about the world around you as you transition into adulthood. My teens have stepped up to new challenges this year with their education that have really stretched them (and me). Mondayy, my oldest participated in his first debate. This guy has delved deep into Scripture and borrowed books to understand both sides and prep for his debate. All four did a fabulous job thinking these issues through and participating with their assigned position and I love the conversations it has sparked between the four of them as well as in our own home! .
