Listening Closely…

Written by Heather Haupt 1 Comment

Learning is such a grand adventure!

Our family theme for the semester is:

ATTENTIVENESS

listening closely and watching carefully

It has been very necessary to focus on that in our house this year.  Not only are the boys in great need of working on their listening skills, but as I’ve alluded to before, I need help in this area too!

As a parent it has been helpful to have one area of character to focus on and I’m thankful that we have a curriculum that incorporates many different areas of study that tie into growing in this character trait!  KONOS is a unit-study curriculum that is based around character traits.  In our unit on Attentiveness, we will cover ears, sound, music, eyes, frontiersmen/trackers, native americans and birds – learning about each of these topics in a hands-on way.

Last week we were crawling thru the human ear…

(I can’t draw for the life of me, but thankfully the boys don’t seem to care.)

Xander enjoyed crawling through and pointing things out.  Keegan just wanted to crawl through super fast and touch everything and Treyton was on a mission to conquer and destroy.

While learning about the inner-workings of the ear were almost too challenging, it was neat to see the two older boys grasp why our outer-ear is shaped the way it is!

We grabbed a funnel from the garage and a short piece of pvc pipe.  With spray bottles in hand the boys had a race to see who could get the most water in a cup.  One had an outer ear (funnel) and the other just an ear canal.  They definitely “get” why God gave us outer ears.  They capture a whole lot more sound that just a small canal!

NOTE TO SELF: be sure and have three sets if possible, because the 1 year old likes tagging along too!  The extra squirt bottle really saved the day!

    Great idea!
Love your take on how the boys each interacted differently 🙂 Keeping a positive outlook as you deal with various personalities! It’s the same for my three girls!
    Looks like fun.

Instagram post 2233099506281729942_1420023259 You can have a usually tidy home or regularly imaginative children, but seldom do the two simultaneously go hand in hand. She's playing house, raising her children, and informed me she's in the middle of moving... 😯 We can tidy up later... or not... as is evidenced by the hand made basketball hoop still hanging to the side which we ended up incorporating into our space for the time being. But there is peace when we recognize the purpose in their play. #powerofplay #wildandfreechildren #encouragingimagination
Instagram post 2232104592257556739_1420023259 The teen years are such an amazing season of coming into your own, thinking deeply about the world around you as you transition into adulthood. My teens have stepped up to new challenges this year with their education that have really stretched them (and me). Mondayy, my oldest participated in his first debate. This guy has delved deep into Scripture and borrowed books to understand both sides and prep for his debate. All four did a fabulous job thinking these issues through and participating with their assigned position and I love the conversations it has sparked between the four of them as well as in our own home! .

👉👉 Learning to research, learning to reason, and learning to listen to another's arguments are such invaluable skills that will stick with them for the rest of their lives! 👈👈 We are thankful for Worldviews of the Western World curriculum and the Worldview Classes in our area that have provided so much for our homeschool year.
