Last week laid me out. I had a heavy cold that put me out of commission for a week. I couldn’t breathe, didn’t sleep well, lost my voice. You know, that kind of sick… It meant that after a few feeble attempts at a spelling lesson, I called it quits in an attempt to preserve what was left of my voice.
While I broke down and we watched a movie almost every morning that week, I was amazed at how the kids ingenuity kicked into high gear with the time left to themselves free from my plans and interference from other screentime. Oh the gift of idle time here and there to encourage budding creativity.
Angry birds took a trip back to the middle ages.
A boy desperately attempted to build a sling-shot. It was the perfect kind of indoor slingshot that only shot if he held it just so, but wasn’t strong enough to do any damage. I’m incredibly thankful because I discovered this gem after he’d been shooting it all day…
Greta has had a penchant for snagging my red dumbphone and hitting redial or sending gibberish texts to people. Thankfully, she discovered the red calculators and settled for pretend play instead!
Another boy discovered the wonder of the spirograph and made hundreds of creations and started writing circular poetry to go along with some of them.
And mama, who wanted so desperately to continue our read-aloud time, resorted to audiobooks to pass the time each afternoon. My sister even sent us the link for a whole bunch of free audiobooks! The boys and I have already made an extensive list of books we want to listen to in the coming months!
All of the news wasn’t so good. Order {or semi-order} always degenerates into chaos. But we can’t win with everything, right?
This is a great “chapter” that should be in every how-to book on home schooling! The real life event of sickness/weakness met with real life skills of ingenuity/ creativity equals a whole week (not just a moment!) of home education at its best!
